Stone Oak Restaurants in August 2026: What’s New on 1604

For sixteen years, the roughly 10,000 square feet at 18740 Stone Oak Parkway has been the address neighbors point to when they want to explain how hard it is to make a restaurant work in 78258. Watermark Grill, Drew's American Grill, Buckles & Buns, CoCo Bongo, and most recently Frida Mexican Restaurant & Bar all took the space and closed. The last operator to really hold it was Reggiano's, and Reggiano's shut in 2009.

That corner reopened on February 9 as Katerina, and by Valentine's Day the dining room was already booked out with a wedding in the private room. It is one of several changes that have quietly rewritten the drive between 1604 and Canyon Golf Road this year, and it is worth putting them on a single map before the first-ever Stone Oak Restaurant Week starts August 8.

The Corner That Kept Failing, and Why This One Feels Different

If you have lived here more than a few years, you have probably watched a tenant come and go at the corner of Stone Oak Parkway and Loop 1604. Almost 10,000 square feet of commercial space near that intersection has buried the culinary aspirations of tenant after tenant, with Frida closing after four years, CoCo Bongo lasting a year, and Buckles & Buns, Drew's American Grill and Watermark Grill folding after short runs; the most successful tenant, Reggiano's, closed in 2009 after a ten-year run.

Katerina opened February 9, 2026 at 18740 Stone Oak Parkway, just off Loop 1604 and adjacent to the Stone Oak Plaza shopping center. The pedigree behind the room is the reason it is worth a second look rather than a shrug. Chef Greg Carter has worked in Michelin-starred kitchens with Joel Robuchon, Bobby Flay, Thomas Keller and José Andrés, and Justin Manzi is a Culinary Institute of America-trained chef whose experience includes The Oceanaire Seafood Room, Morton's Steakhouse and Pig & Prince Modern Gastro Pub. The kitchen is running as a scratch operation, with the team making their own breads, butchering their own meats, and making their own pasta.

Early demand suggests locals are willing to give this space one more try. "We're already fully booked for Valentine's Day and for a wedding in our private dining room," owner Dick Jones told the San Antonio Current shortly after opening.

A Table for the Loop You Already Drive

Most posts about Stone Oak dining read like they were written from a corporate press release two zip codes away. Here is what has actually changed on the drive you already make, mapped by address.

Two things stand out when you line them up. The first is that these are almost all operator-driven concepts, not another absentee franchise on triple-net. The MilkShake Factory at 21025 US Hwy 281 N. #59 is the Pittsburgh chocolatier and ice cream parlor's first San Antonio location, with the debut pushed from the end of 2025 into the first quarter of 2026. La Panadería revealed in June that its Stone Oak location at 1011 N. Loop 1604 E will be the mini-chain's largest, with an opening slated for late fall.

The second is that Stone Oak Mercantile is finally giving the far north end of the parkway a reason to stop rather than pass through. The development at Stone Oak Parkway and Canyon Golf Road will feature the Alamo City's first Crust Pizza Co., along with new locations for Chick-fil-A and Black Rock Coffee, in a 57,673-square-foot project anchored by three pad sites. The center is now under construction with a summer 2026 delivery and sits inside 78258 near NEISD schools and the medical hub.

The First Stone Oak POA Restaurant Week

The most useful thing on the calendar this month is not a single opening. It is a coordinated one. The Stone Oak POA is running the first Stone Oak POA Restaurant Week from August 8 through August 15.

Restaurant weeks are usually a downtown affair. Getting one to run inside a master-planned suburb, with a POA as the organizer, is unusual and worth treating as a pilot. If it draws well, it tends to come back yearly. A few notes for planning your week without turning it into a scramble:

1. Anchor one meal midweek at a place you have never tried. Restaurant weeks exist because restaurants throughout the region are operating amid increased food and labor costs, tighter margins and a summer slowdown, and August is exactly when a new operator most needs a full room.
2. Save Katerina for a Friday or Saturday if you are going. The room has been packed since February, and mid-August is not the week to walk in.
3. Take out-of-town family somewhere on the loop rather than driving them to Pearl. The point of a neighborhood restaurant week is proving you do not have to.
4. Watch the POA's site for the participating list. As of press time the roster is being finalized, and the POA is the source of truth rather than aggregator apps.

Even if the participating list ends up modest, the exercise itself matters. Stone Oak has spent a decade being described as a residential zip code with dining attached. A POA-run restaurant week is the first time the neighborhood has organized around the second half of that description.

What's Still Under Construction on Your Route

Two projects worth knowing about because they will change your errands before the end of the year.

Stone Oak Mercantile at Stone Oak Parkway and Canyon Golf is the more visible one. The center will also include various retail outlets and services, including a veterinary office and a dentist, which means it is being built as a daily-use hub rather than a destination pad. Black Rock Coffee is a Scottsdale, Arizona franchise that made its San Antonio introduction in the summer of 2022 and serves espresso and blended drinks with syrups including grapefruit, kiwi, and lavender. Combined with the Chick-fil-A and Crust Pizza, this is essentially a full weekday errand triangle on one corner. If you live off Canyon Golf, TPC Parkway, or Wilderness Oak, the shape of your Saturday morning is about to change.

The second one is planning rather than pouring concrete, but it will matter longer. The Public Discussion Draft of the Stone Oak Area Regional Center Plan is available for review, with public comment open through Sunday, April 26, 2026. Regional center plans are how the City of San Antonio decides which corridors get zoning density, which get sidewalk investments, and how commercial nodes evolve. It is the least glamorous document in this post and probably the most consequential. What is happening in 2026 is different in kind, not just in count. A scratch kitchen with Michelin-lineage chefs took the address that ate five previous concepts. A regional bakery picked Stone Oak for its largest store rather than another inner-loop location. The POA itself is running a restaurant week. And the city is drafting a regional plan that will shape what the parkway becomes over the next decade.

The best time to look closely at a neighborhood is not when the market is loudest. It is when the operators start voting with their leases.

None of this changes what your house is worth this week. It changes what the drive between your driveway and 1604 feels like, which is the part of living here that shows up every day.
